They Do It Again – Excalibur 3926t Dehydrator Critique

Amazon is so much cheaper than everywhere else, even Walmart. And with free shipping on a lot of things here, who wants to go to the store anymore and burn gas.

I bought this product for my husband for Christmas. He uses it on a weekly basis. I did find that if I use 12 trays and parchment, I have to switch the bottom couple of trays up to the top after a couple of hours or the bottom 2 to 3 will be lagging behind quite a bit. It will take up some room on your cabinet, and the addition of trays will add height if that is a consideration under upper kitchen cabinets. Not to mention the high sodium contents and many use monosodium glutamate (MSG)! I found this one to be a good mid-priced dehydrator – it would allow us to make meat jerky, dehydrate fruits and vegetables, as well as make our own fruit roll ups. Not only is there no timer to set, there’s no counter to note how long the dehydrator has been running. You may think you’ll remember that you put the jerky in at 8 pm, but sometimes you won’t. Also, side note, I really don’t recommend the jerky kit (sold separately). Just use lean cuts instead if you want Jack Links-style jerky. I would also recommend purchasing extra trays. The machine comes with 5 but I had to do two batches because all the meat did not fit in one go around (about 3 pounds of beef).

It comes with an instruction manual on how to dry different types of food. We are very pleased with the purchase. Machine doesn’t get hot to the touch. It takes about 4-6 hours to make 1 batch 5 trays high.

I researched many dehydrators before purchasing this one and this one is a GREAT product for a great price. My husband loved it! I have used it to dry soaked nuts and I love that this machine has a variable temps. I look forward to using it for many other drying I am very happy with this NESCO Harvest FD-75PR Dehydrator. The only reason I would upgrade is to be able to have a tray where there isn’t a hole in the center (for making raw pizza dough and raw wraps). Before I could only buy what I needed at time so they did not go bad.

It is easy to clean, compact, and gets the job done. On the downside, it is a little loud as the electric fan runs full out the whole time, but that is necessary for the process.

I have no comparative analysis as this is our first and only dehydrator. You may want to get more solid tray liners as anything saucy, syrupy, or juicy can be dehydrated as a “bark” or later bagged-up for reconstitution.

I also dried some fresh pineapple chunks. There’s nothing better than fresh pineapple, but I thought I’d try it dried.

I would recommend this to others, especially for the price, although anyone buying this should purchase the plug-in timer at the same time. WINDSHIELD SCRATCH REPAIR.
